Welcome to the department of English Language and Literature at the University of North Dakota. Home to a vibrant community of top-notch scholars and teachers as well as some of UND’s best students, our department offers many exciting opportunities described on this website. The UND English Department’s unique balance of teaching and research benefits students. Our breadth of faculty interests and rigorous graduate program produce fascinating specialized graduate and undergraduate courses showcasing professors’ expertise. At the same time, our dedicated, accessible faculty provide individualized attention through small classes where students’ ideas are valued.
English has long been one of the top majors– and a natural choice as a second major or minor– because it prepares students to make the most of their learning and their lives. English language and literature courses therefore play a key role in Essential Studies, but the department’s offerings also include literature, composition, creative writing, linguistics, and English education as well as many collaborative endeavors. English students are able to pursue interests in writing, editing and publishing, teaching, translating, and graduate and professional school.
The study of English integrates the most abstract and pragmatic goals of university education. Personal discovery and creative expression pair with intensive development of the abilities highly sought by employers: critical analysis, effective written and spoken communication, and productive reading and research. As the world changes through technology and globalization, such thinking skills become more important than ever before. In English Language and Literature classes, careful attention to language and production of meaning in all types of text foster insight into human experience and culture–and reading is more fun, too.
