Department: Biology
Position: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor
The Department of Biology at the University of North Dakota invites applications for two positions in Grassland Biology. The University of North Dakota has an -800 acre field station of native upland and saline tall grass prairie available for hypothesis driven experimental research on grassland ecosystems.
Tenure-track Position in Grassland Ecosystem Ecology/Wildlife Biology. We seek to fill a tenure-track position in Grassland Ecosystem Ecology/Wildlife Biology at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The position is integral to our
undergraduate major in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology and will also strengthen the department's teaching and research mission in basic science. The individual will combine hypothesis driven research on grassland biology, with the ability to interact with resource management agencies. We are particularly interested in individuals studying the impact of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on grasslands, potentially including the role of mammals, fire, and invasive species on ecosystem structure and function, along with the implication of these disturbances for ecosystem restoration and/or wildlife management. Teaching duties will not exceed two courses per year during the first several years. Courses taught will depend on the candidate's area of expertise and potentially include Grassland Ecology, Management and Restoration, Mammalogy, Conservation Biology, or participation in a team-taught Introductory Biology course. A Ph.D. is required and postdoctoral experience desirable. The successful candidates will demonstrate the potential to establish a productive and extramurally funded research program. The department offers graduate degrees through the Ph.D. and active training of graduate students is expected.
Assistant Professor in Ecological Genomics of Grassland Species. We seek to fill a temporary Assistant Professor position with an individual who combines field-based and laboratory approaches for hypothesis driven research on grasses native to the Northern Plains. We are particularly interested in individuals who can study the genomic basis of adaptation to the extreme local environment unique to the Northern Plains (e.g., extreme cold, water stress, high salinity, or heavy metals). The individual will interact with a group of faculty working with both plants and animals who seek to understand the genetic mechanisms underlying responses of organisms to their natural environment by combining functional genomics and ecological approaches. Teaching duties each year will include Systematic Botany and coordination of Introductory Biology labs for non-majors. The position is a regular 9 month academic appointment available for a minimum of two years. A PhD is required and post-doctoral experience desirable.
Both positions will begin 16 August 2010. Review of applications will begin [3 weeks after appearance of the ad in Science] and continue until the positions are filled. Send CV, three representative reprints, statement of teaching and research interests, and have three letters of reference sent to either Dr. Robert Newman (Grassland
Ecosystem/Wildlife Biology position) or Dr. Steven Ralph (Ecological Genomics position), 10 Cornell St. Stop 9019, University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND 58202-9019.
