Description
of Organization: The Northern Great Plains Center for People
and the Environment (NGP CP&E) is a Center of Excellence
at the University of North Dakota (UND). Its mission is
to lead a transition to sustainability, i.e., meet the needs
and wishes of people while preserving Earths vital
life-support systems. Since most environmental problems
are now social problems, the Center emphasizes interactions
with end users, for whom it conducts solutions-driven research
aimed at supporting wiser environmental and economic decisions.
Instruments are built to permit the required environmental
measurements. NGP CP&Es education mandate is broad,
both informal and formal. Television interstitials educate
the public about environmental issues. Formal education
occurs at UND in an Earth System Science and Policy graduate
program (masters and doctoral). The Center is experiencing
significant growth by partnering with NASA to operate the
National Suborbital Education and Research Center, the primary
resource for which is NASAs DC-8 airborne laboratory.
In addition, the NGP CP&E collaborates with investigators
from 7 other universities in the Upper Midwest Aerospace
Consortium. See www.umac.org.
