Richard Crawford to give UND Faculty Lecture: Richard Crawford, Ph.D, will be giving the UND Faculty Lecture this coming Tuesday, Jan 23rd, at the North Dakota Museum of Art. There is a reception at 4 PM, and the lecture begins at 4:30 PM. The title of his lecture is "The Metaphor of the Prairie: 35 years of Watching the Mystery Unfold".
The faculty lecture series showcases about five faculty each year who are each invited to give a lecture. Rich's lecture will be about prairie, something which he has researched and written much about. He and his wife Glinda own a quarter section of prarie in Oakville Township, just east of Emerado. Together, they have invited numerous prairie plants to live in their back yard, being careful to use seed stocks gathered locally, in most cases, ones they have collected themselves. Rich of course is also an ornithologist. He has taught ornithology at UND for many years, and has conducted and supervised numerous research projects carried out on the prairie landscape. Rich is much more than a scientist studying a prairie, to him, prairie is a very personal thing. He and Glinda have in so many instances been supportive of each other's efforts in promoting prairie, a wonderful example being the Soaring Eagle Prairie on the UND campus that was established through Gli nda's initiatives.
Some of you may not yet know that the Crawfords will be moving back to their prairie roots in Missouri in 2007. Rich and Glinda, along with their daughter, Melanie, have purchased a small farm near Kirksville, Missouri, on which they will live and nuture prairie. Come if you can!!
