The successful candidate uses genomics to address fundamental questions in biology and will strengthen an existing departmental emphasis in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. The successful candidate will establish a productive, extramural-funded research program that includes the training of graduate students. Senior candidates with robust genomics research programs who can provide future leadership in campus initiatives related to genomics will also be pursued. Teaching duties will include an undergraduate Genomics course and an additional undergraduate offering. A graduate course will also eventually be expected. Teaching expectations will not exceed two courses per year during the first several years.

Background information:
The campus environment is conducive for building a competitive research program.
Over the past several years the Biology department has strengthened its curriculum and research in molecular, cellular and developmental biology (MCD). Towards this end the department is: i) developing an area of emphasis in MCD Biology at both the undergraduate and graduate level, and ii) vigorously pursuing the addition of new faculty in this area. In addition, there has been a campus-wide Proteomics, Genomics and Bioinformatics (PGB) Initiative to enhance expertise and infrastructure in those areas. Moreover, the state of North Dakota has initiated the Red River Valley Research Corridor to help develop technology-based enterprises, and the state has provided Centers of Excellence funds for the soon-to-be constructed Research Park at UND.
Molecular biology, imaging, tissue culture, and animal care facilities are available within the building (Starcher Hall) that houses the Biology Department. A list of core equipment can be accessed here. In addition to resources within the Biology Department, resources are also available in the nearby Proteomics/Mass Spectrometry Core Laboratory, Basic Sciences Imaging Center, and Center for Biomedical Research (an additional animal facility).
A core of faculty members in the Biology Department have externally-funded research programs at the genetic, cellular, and molecular levels (D. Darland, T. Darland, La Duke , Meberg , Rhen, Simmons, Sheridan , Tkach, Vaughan). Biology faculty also have productive interactions with researchers in other departments, such as the Department of Chemistry and the UND School of Medicine. These interactions broaden the expertise and equipment available for our faculty.
