What is a BlackBerry, and how does it work?
A BlackBerry is a handheld wireless device created by Research in Motion (RIM). BlackBerries read email and calendars from enterprise-class email systems, such as UND's GroupWise service, and most models also function as cell phones.
While a BlackBerry is a type of personal digital assistant (PDA), it is not meant to be used in the same way as a Palm Pilot or PocketPC. Those devices are literally miniature computers that in some cases happen to have email capabilities. A BlackBerry is a email/calendar reading device with cell phone abilities that also may include some PDA abilities.

How do I Backup/Restore my data on the BlackBerry?
The Backup/Restore utility is part of the BlackBerry Desktop software, which comes with your BlackBerry purchase. Install the BlackBerry Desktop software on your PC using administrative privileges.
Automatic backup setup: We recommend backing up your handheld data on a regular basis. Connect BB handheld to the computer > BB Desktop Manager software > Backup and Restore > Options > Choose Automatically backup my handheld every xx days (we recommend at least every 7 days) > Now select what you want to backup by choosing either Backup all handheld application data (we recommend) or be selective with the other option of Backup all application data, except for email messages or Backup all application data, except for application data that is synchronized with desktop PIM applications. > Click OK.
Backup: To manually backup your BB handheld data > connect BB handheld to the computer > BB Desktop Manager software > Backup and Restore > Backup > Default filename will be given in the format Backup-(yyyy-mm-dd).ipd, which you can change if you want > Save.
Restore: If disaster strikes or you are simply replacing your BB, then you may want to recover from your latest backup (mentioned above).
Connect BB handheld to the computer > BB Desktop Manager software > Backup and Restore >Advanced > choose the backup file from the File menu and the backup file will appear on the right side panel > your BB handheld data should display on the right side panel. Now select from the left side panel (backup file) the database(s) you would like to copy to your BB handheld. Use the arrow button. Click Close button when finished.
