The department operates a variety of computational platforms, ranging from PC to mainframe, to address varied needs. For word processing and communications, graduate students and faculty have 24-hour access to departmental computer labs housing 20 networked PCs and Macintoshes with laser printers. For research, the Department maintains nine SGI (Silicon Graphics) workstations, two SGI Origin Servers, and four Compaq/DEC Alpha workstations (two are powerful XP1000s). A growing number of high-0end PCs are also configured to run Linux, or are dual boot machines that function as workstations as needed.
