Confidentiality

In general, all communications between you and your counselor are confidential. No information about you will be released outside the Center without your written permission.

The EXCEPTIONS to confidentiality include:

  • it is determined you are a threat to yourself or another person,
  • there is suspected or actual abuse or neglect of a child,
  • there is a medical emergency, or
  • a court order.

In the event of such a situation, we will make every effort to discuss it with you before taking any action.

In addition, the Center keeps a record of your visits. This record contains all the information you completed prior to your first appointment, notes summarizing your sessions, any psychological test data, and other information you may provide for us.

Records are not part of your educational record. The records are kept in locked files and maintained for seven years following your last visit.

Because we take self-harm and suicide risk very seriously at UND, the University Counseling Center has implemented the following protocol:

  • Upon determination of risk of suicide, clients are required to attend four (4) sessions to further assess the seriousness of risk.
  • The Dean of Students is notified if the required four sessions are not completed within the agreed upon time frame.
