Throughout the academic year, the University Counseling Center offers a number of groups, which address a variety of concerns.
UND Counseling Center Couples imageGroups provide an opportunity for active learning, a place to address problems with other students experiencing similar concerns, a time to receive support and an opportunity to communicate with others.
The groups consist of a small number of people, generally not more than eight, and one or more counselors/therapists.
Students who gain most from groups are those who take an active part in the process – giving and receiving honest feedback.
Because of the active nature of group counseling, it can be more effective than individual counseling in resolving certain problems and issues.
As with individual counseling, confidentiality is stressed and what is discussed in groups is not talked about outside of the group.
Some of the typical groups offered by the University Counseling Center are: Body Image, Mood Disorders, Stress Management, Relationship Development and, Alcohol/Drug Education.
Active Groups:
- Mood Group: Wednesdays, 2:00 - 3:30 pm, University Counseling Center
This group focuses on relationships, intimacy, boundaries, self-awareness and other components of interpersonal process. The group is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Specific focus is sometimes determined by group needs. The group is designed to help group members learn to deal with a variety of concerns involving feelings of depression and anxiety, resolving relationship issues, and other personal concerns.

The relaxed group is open to any student who wants to look at his or her alcohol or other drug usage. This is a totally voluntary group for people who have decided continued alcohol or other drug use is not in their best interests at this time. The group is very relaxed and is facilitated by Jim Murphy, Staff Counselor here at UCC. If you have any questions concerning this group, you can call Jim Murphy at 777-2127 for further information.

In addition to information and handouts, each session will include a guided imagery relaxation experience in order to help the students learn progressive relaxation and diaphragmatic breathing skills. We will also work with the Stress Eraser, a hand held, biofeedback device that trains an individual in learning to synchronize the breath with the heart rate. The information will recycle each 4-5 weeks and a student may drop in any time. Students should call 7-2127 and ask for Jane, or just drop in.
