The Environmental Assessment Survey (EAS) is designed to assess biannually the demographic characteristics of the students living in the residential halls at the University of North Dakota as well as their satisfaction towards housing staff, maintenance and custodial staff, policies and procedures, facilities, dinning services, programming, and hall government. Surveys were conducted previously in the fall of the years 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2005
A total of 1,500 (825 male and 675 female) students who lived in the university residence halls in Fall 2007 were selected randomly from a total 2,409 (1,320 males and 1,089 females) students living in residence halls and having a campus e-mail address registered in the PeopleSoft system. These 1500 students were e-mailed an invitation electronically to participate in the Environmental Assessment Survey (EAS) consisting of 137 questions. This is the third time an online survey was developed and facilitated for use with UND resident students. Two follow-up reminders were e-mailed to sampled residents who did not participate in the survey to promote participation. A total of 477 respondents participated in the survey, resulting in a net response rate of 32%.
- Housing Staff: Students are comfortable talking to their resident assistant with regard to University concerns (94% comfortable) or personal concerns (81%). 75% would talk to a hall director about a concern. Over 80% report the central housing staff treat them in a professional manner and are able to answer their housing related questions.
- U Card Office: Most respondents state U Card staff treats them professionally (98%). They also report they don't use the U Card website (82%). Students most often use their U Card for meals (80%).
- Maintenance / Custodial Staff: 98% of respondents state bathrooms are usually or always clean. Nearly all respondents (99%) state custodial staff are friendly. 51% of students prefer no change in housekeeping of bathroom and suite areas, even though self-cleaning these areas may reduce housing costs.
- General Student Information: Of students using the Complex Service Center, 99% report adequate services are provided. 80% of students report they have read the Planner Handbook. 42% of respondents state they have transferred rooms, and 88% of these students state the transfer process meets their needs.
- Policies & Procedures: Most residents (91%) report housing policies are enforced fairly. Over 80% are aware of parental notification for drug and alcohol violations.
- Facilities: Students report they are secure in the residence halls (97%), in the tunnels (96%), and with the amount of lighting (95%). 91% of students report they own a laptop computer, and nearly all report using word processing, Internet, and e-mail. Respondents feel internet speed is adequate (84%). 74% of respondents would use lockable space if it were provided, with legal papers being the most often reported item that would be locked. Students generally report being satisfied with current mailing services, with just 21% stating they would prefer a single mailbox per person and 94% stating they seldom receive mail intended for someone else.
- Residence Hall Fitness Center: 73% of respondents state they never use the All Around Fitness Center, up significantly from the 55% stating no use in the 2005-06 survey. It is important to note the campus Wellness Center opened in fall of 2006.
- Dining Services: Most respondents state they know the locations where U Card dollars can be used, with the exception of Engelstad Pro Shop (40%), and Barnes and Noble (51%). Relatively few have taken advantage of non-traditional dining options such as Make-Your-Own sack lunch (19%). Over 70% of respondents rate their overall dining center experience as good or very good.
- Programming: The highest participation in residence hall activities is 83% reporting participation in social activities. Students are most satisfied with intramural/recreational activities (85%), and report highest dissatisfaction with weekend programming (28% dissatisfied).
- ARH & Hall Government: 60% of respondents state they know what the Association of Residence Halls is, and of these students, 58% have participated in at least one activity. 74% of students state they have watched Residence Life Cinema and 80% state they feel the movies are valuable. Most respondents (70%) are not willing to pay additional fees to increase the number of movies shown from 12 to 20.
- Hall Environment: Few respondents state noise in the residence hall is a problem. 75% state there is adequate quiet study areas in their hall. Just half of students (50%) report community contracts make them feel like they have a voice in their community structure, yet 63% feel they are responsible to ask fellow students to be quiet. 5% of residents report they smoke. Minimal use of the land-line phone is reported, with 20% stating they are used to make local calls, 6% stating they are used for long distance, and 9% stating they are used for messaging/voicemail. Students prefer to receive information and updates via e-mail.
