Philosophy: The Univeristy of North Dakota welcomes, encourages and celebrates the diversity of its students, faculty and staff. The resultant community derives its distinctive character and strength from the blending array of cultures, beliefs, attitudes, learning styles, capacities, perspectives, and voices of its constituent elements. We believe that each individual and group within our community is in some way differently abled and contributes to the education of others, whether as role models and exemplars or through unique insights and perspectives. Only by cherishing and building upon these individual and group strengths can the university attain "real community."

Charge:
The subcommittee will serve in an advisory capacity to the UND Council on Campus Climate.  In so doing, its advice will be directed toward the encouragement and advocacy of full participation of all persons within the university community.  Specific initiatives of the subcommittee will reflect any assignments from the UND Council on Campus Climate, as well as, those deemed appropriate by its own membership.  In addition, the subcommittee is permitted, if needed, to appoint and establish its own work groups that include others from the university community.

Structure: The subcommittee will report to the President by way of the UND Council on Campus Climate and will be appointed by the President.  The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and the Vice President for Student and Outreach Services will serve as co-facilitators.  The vice president who is currently not chairing the American Indian Programs Council will serve as chair of the subcommittee.  The Director of Multi-Cultural Student Services will serve as vice chair to the two vice presidents.

Membership: Membership of the subcommittee will consist of the chair and thirteen other members, four of whom are ex officio.  The latter will be the Director of Multi-Cultural Student Services, Director of Affirmative Action, Director of the International Center, and the Director of the American Indian Student Services.  The remaining nine members will consist of three faculty members, three students, one staff person, one person from the community, and one person from the Grand Forks Air Force Base.
