There are four basic elements involved in the UND Crisis Coordination Team Model. The first element is intervention. Intervention is usually a physical presence designed to prevent an action or to maintain or alter a condition. The next element is the physical or emotional support of a person in crisis. Next is diagnosis or assessment of a situation and the development of a plan of action. Action or follow-up is carrying the established plan towards its completion. The University of North Dakota Crisis Coordination Team Model integrates student development and learning centered theories to enhance the capabilities for student success. The model includes campus, city and private agencies with the following objectives:
- Increase communications
- Provide an assessment strategy for persons in crisis
- Deliver services
- Cut red-tape so students can finish their academic work
- Provide on-going assessment of services
- Provide environmental support for students
The results of the model include:
- Increased student self-esteem
- Increased retention
- Increased self-directed learning of students
- Increased mentors for students
- Increased sense of caring on the campus
- Students see a connectedness with people who care about them
- Increased persistence towards a degree
The Crisis Coordination Team User's Guide has sections covering: Crisis Procedures, Crisis Grids, Resources, Communication grids, Response Protocols, Community Building Activities, and Reporting and Follow-up.
