Making Your Organization Accessible to Students with
Disabilities
Give the message that your organization welcomes students with disabilities.
- All materials/publications should include a disability access statement,
for example: This material is available in alternate format upon request.
Please contact name/department/phone/address.
- Make announcement at meetings.
- Schedule meetings in accessible locations.
Know who's responsible for what.
- The student is responsible for requesting an accommodation and working
out the details with the organization representative.
- The organization representative is responsible for providing the accommodation.
- Disability Support Services can assist the organization or the student
in deciding what type of accommodation is appropriate. Appropriate accommodations
are those which make the information and communication accessible to
people with disabilities such as material in alternate format.
Negotiating accommodations.
- Whether or not an accommodation is provided is not negotiable. How an
accommodation is made is negotiable. The organization representative may
wish to suggest an appropriate alternative to the standard conditions or
requested accommodation; however, he/she may not suggest a limiting of an
accommodation.
If a UND student is deaf or hard of hearing, they may ask that you provide
an interpreter or captionist for a meeting or event that your department
is sponsoring. Providing access to the services, events and offerings
UND sponsors is a responsibility the university has collectively. Access
for some people means communicating through sign language interpreting
or real time captioning (RTC).
If someone requests sign language interpreting or captioning, please
call DSS at 777-3425.
All University programs and activities
must be accessible to students with disabilities.
