The University is federally
mandated to provide equal access in the facilities,
programs and services it provides. Equal access
for some people means communicating through
a sign language interpreter or using RealTime
captioning (RTC). If a UND student, staff person,
faculty member or a member of the public is
deaf or hard of hearing, they may request that
either an interpreter or RTC be provided at
a meeting or event your department is sponsoring.
In July 2001, the University established a
local fund for providing access on campus. Disability
Services for Students was charged with administering
that fund and scheduling interpreters and captionists
for UND departments and offices.
If someone calls your department and requests
sign language interpreting or RealTime captioning
for a meeting or event you are providing, follow
these steps:
- Call DSS at 777-3425.
- Tell the receptionist you would like
to schedule an interpreter or captionist,
and she will help you.
- Typically, the cost will be paid by
the access fund.
There may come a time in the current funding cycle that the fund is depleted.
If so, DSS will help you find other funding sources. Providing access to the
services, events and offerings UND sponsors is a responsibility the University
has collectively. DSS will work with you in fulfilling that responsibility
regardless of the funding situation. |
