Confidentiality
Disability Services for Students adheres to the privacy and confidentiality
standards of the University of North Dakota Code of Student Life and
complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)
and, where applicable, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

Disclosure of Disability Information
Disability Services for Students is the office of record responsible for
storing student disability documentation. This information is kept in
secured files, and access is restricted.
DSS maintains this confidential information for the purposes of identifying
reasonable accommodations for students who have requested accommodations
and verifying these needs to the faculty and/or staff who are providing
the accommodations.
Disability related information is not given to anyone without the student's
knowledge or consent.
Disclosure is made on a "need to know" basis." In other words, DSS discloses
this information to specific individuals only when a student has asked
that individual for an accommodation.
The disability information disclosed by DSS has two parts:
- The student has a documented disability that substantially limits
one or more major life activity, such as walking, seeing or learning.
- " A description of the functional limitations that justify the specific
accommodation(s) identified.
