POLICY on FLEXIBILITY IN CLASS ATTENDANCE ACCOMMODATION
Disability Services for Students (DSS) may recommend flexibility in class attendance as a reasonable accommodation for a student whose
disability adversely affects his/her ability to attend classes that require class participation, group activities, class presentations
or attendance at events outside the classroom. The disability must be significant enough that it prevents the student from being able to
attend class and/or class activities regularly.
Disability accommodations do not compromise course requirements. Alternative scheduling and/or activities must meet the same academic
requirements and standards as those applied to the other students in the class.
DSS Responsibilities
- Identify the need for flexibility in class attendance as a classroom accommodation.
- Consult and/or problem solve with the instructor when appropriate.
Faculty Responsiblities
- Discuss with the student and decide how flexibility in attendance will work in your course.
Note: Any alternative method of meeting class requirements must meet the same educational goal as the original activity.
- Consult with DSS when appropriate.
Student Responsibilities
- Request a flexibility in class attendance accommodation from DSS.
- Follow the Flexibility in Class Attendance Policy and Student’s Procedures.
- Discuss your need for this accommodation with the instructor and be prepared to show the instructor your Verification of Accommodation Letter, if asked.
- Notify DSS and/or the instructor of any changes in the arrangements.
- Take appropriate steps to correct any problems.
