VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION SERVICES FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is a state and federally funded agency available in all fifty states. Their
goals are: (1) to assist individuals with disabilities to achieve competitive employment and increased
independence through rehabilitation services (2) to provide training and employment services to eligible
individuals, so they can become and remain employed.
HOW VR CAN HELP COLLEGE STUDENTS
VR may be able to assist students with expenses not covered by other resources, equipment related
to the disability, career counseling, expenses related to job seeking, to name a few. For a complete
description of their services, see the VR web site at http://www.nd.gov/dhs/dvr/individual/index.html
GENERAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS IN NORTH DAKOTA
North Dakota VR serves anyone who meets the eligibility guidelines and is living in the state. The
individual must have either a physical or mental disability that is a barrier to employment. Students who
suspect they have a disability can also apply for services. If the student does not have access to other
funding sources, VR can provide the evaluation services necessary to determine if a disability exists.
Final determination of eligibility may take up to 60 days from the time of application.
The services provided by Vocational Rehabilitation are typically paid by VR or funded through other programs.
VR clients are expected to use other program funds for which they qualify and/or medical insurance before VR
pays for services.
