Employment helps reduce students' indebtedness and
provides valuable job experience. Studies show working helps students budget their time
and has a positive effect on their grades and attitude toward school. The number of hours
students work will depends on their class schedule, the needs of the employer, and, if
awarded Federal Work Study (FWS), the amount of the FWS award. A maximum of 15 to 20 hours
a week is recommended for full-time students.
FEDERAL WORK STUDY (FWS)
Federal Work Study is available to undergraduate and
graduate students who demonstrate financial need. A work study award indicates eligibility
to seek employment and is not a guarantee of a job. The average FWS award is $2,200 per
academic year.
Departments currently hire approximately 1800 students
through the FWS program each year. Jobs range over the entire campus and some off-campus
employers are eligible to hire under the FWS program as well. Jobs vary from clerical to
research, from service to security.

INSTITUTIONAL EMPLOYMENT
(INST)
Institutional Employment (INST) is available to undergraduate
and graduate students enrolled at least half-time and is not based on financial need. Work
is available on campus and wages may vary depending on the job.

JOB LOCATION AND DEVELOPMENT (JLD)

effort between Job Service North Dakota and UND to refer students for part-time
employment with area businesses. Off campus part-time jobs are posted at the
Job Service ND

school full-time and receiving VA benefits. Veterans can work up to 250 hours a semester
at Federal minimum wage. Forms for this program are available at the UND Veterans Service
