Interests ::
My forthcoming book (Globalization and its Apparitions: Intercultural Engagements and Disengagements Seenfrom the South and the North. La globalización y sus espejismos. Encuentros y desencuentros interculturales vistos desde el Sur y el Norte. Edited by Michael Handelsman and Olaf Berwald. Quito: Editorial El Conejo, 2009) includes essays by German and Latin American poets, philosophers, and literary scholars. My last volume (Der untote Gott. Religion und Ästhetik in der deutschen und österreichischen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts, edited by Olaf Berwald and Gregor Thuswaldner. Köln/Weimar/Wien: Böhlau, 2007) explores the nexus of art, writing, and religion in modern and contemporary Germany and Austria. I have also written monographs on twentieth-century novelist and playwright Peter Weiss (An Introduction to the Works of Peter Weiss, Rochester, NY: Camden House, 2003), and on sixteenth-century humanist and theologian Philipp Melanchthon (Philipp Melanchthons Sicht der Rhetorik, Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz, 1994), as well as articles on modern writers (Nietzsche, Kafka, Hesse, Benn, Braun), literary theory, and global social issues (“Recolonized Reason: Torture and the Globalization of Indifference,” 2009). Teaching German courses at UND is an immense joy, from first-year language/culture courses to advanced seminars on poetry, short stories, or film. The moment you begin to study German, you immerse into a fresh new culture, you become part of it by adding your unique voice to the poems and debates, the stories, dreams, and new realities that constitute continuously changing German and global cultures.
