Summer Course in Vienna, Austria
In the summer of 2010, Dr. Boyd will take a group of students to Vienna to explore the the culture of this incredible German-speaking city. Please send an email if you wish to be placed on the mailing list.
Vienna is one of the most famous cultural centers of European modernity -- home to a multitude of great artists, writers, composers, and thinkers, such as Gustav Klimt, Arthur Schnitzler, Johann Strauss, and Sigmund Freud. Today Vienna is a vibrant European metropolis which is still strongly characterized by its turn-of-the-century legacy, but also exhibits an intriguing fusion of the past and present. While in Vienna we will explore the history, art, architecture, music, theater, politics (past and present), and historical as well as popular culture of Vienna. Activities will include, but are not limited to:
| History: The cultural legacy of Franz Josef and Sissy (Hofburg, Schoenbrunn) |
Coffeehouse Culture: Famous Viennese cafés of the past and present |
| Museums: The Albertina, The Belvedere, and the museums of Vienna's famous museum quarter |
Jugendstil (Art Nouveau): The artists of the Vienna Secession (Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka) and the Wiener Werkstätte (furniture, clothing, jewelry) |
| Salzburg: A day trip to explore the home of Mozart |
Viennese architecture then and now: the planning of a modern city Ringstrasse and Friedensreich Hundertwasser |
In addition, we will attend concerts and plays, meet with members of the university community as well as representatives of various Austrian political parties, and have a discussion with an Austrian author.
Requirements: Everyone is welcome to apply, but only 14 students will be chosen to participate. This course will be conducted in English, but all applicants must have completed at least two semesters of German (or the equivalent). Participants will develop individual research projects, give one short presentation in Vienna, and submit a research paper and a travel journal after the trip.
Applications are due on October 15. The first organizational meeting for participants will be in early November, at which time a non-refundable $200 deposit will be due.
