How to FTP using Fetch for the Macintosh


Fetch is software used to transfer files between two computers on the Internet (FTP). The following uses the UND web server (www.und.nodak.edu) as the example.

Start Fetch.

 

Enter the following into the New Connection dialog box.

1. Host: the name of the computer you are connecting to, e.g. www.und.nodak.edu.
2. User ID: Enter your user name.
3. Password: Enter your password.
4. If you wish to enter a starting directory (ftp path), click the arrow to display the Initial Directory field.
5. Enter your starting directory (ftp path).

Once the connection is made, a listing of files on the host computer will display.

To transfer a file from your PC to the remote host, Click on the Put Files button.

Locate the file to transfer and click the Open button.
A dialog box will display, you may change the name of the file to be uploaded with or click OK to accept.

1. Once the file is uploaded, it will appear in the file list.

2. Status of the transfer will appear in the right portion of the window.

You may create a shortcut that will save the connection information for future use.

If you connected using the means above, while connected, choose File, Save Shortcut. An icon will appear on the desktop and may be double-clicked to start Fetch using these settings.

Otherwise, start Fetch, click cancel on the New Connection screen and then choose the Customize menu and New Shortcut.

Enter the following information:

1. Name: A name of your choosing for these settings.
2. Host: www.und.nodak.edu
3. User ID: Your userid.
4. Directory: The initial directory.

 

Click OK.



To use the shortcut, Start Fetch and to to File, Open Shortcut, and then choose the appropriate shortcut.

or

Click the shortcut icon on the desktop.

Enter your password when prompted.
