PREFACE: This user note assumes that you have a basic working knowledge of Windows 95/98. This means you know how to create sub-directories, copy files from floppy diskettes to sub-directories and are familiar with the operation of Windows Explorer. If you are not comfortable undertaking these basic computer operations, you should stop now and review the Windows 95/98 tutorial. The tutorial can be found by clicking the Start button in the lower left hand corner and selecting Help. Things you'll need before you start:
  1. An e-mail address on one of the following:  U-mail or with CAS or the School of Medicine. If you have not yet activated your U-mail account, visit the ITSS E-mail Information page: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/email.html
STEP #1: Setting up an icon for dialing UND
Enter Dial UND PPP as the new connection. Double click on the My Computer icon on the desktop.

Double click on Dial-up Networking.

Double click on Make New Connection icon.

On the Make New Connection page, change the MyConnection entry to Dial UND PPP.

We assume your modem is configured properly. If you should need to configure your modem, please contact your computer manufacturer or computer retailer. Click Next.

Enter 777-0123 as the phone number. Under Telephone Number, enter 777-0123.  Or, if  you wish to use the 15 minute modem pool, use 777-0125.

(NOTE: if you have call waiting you may want to place *70, in front of the telephone number (if *70, does not work, try #50, or check with your telephone company for the appropriate code). This will disable call waiting while you are connected to 777-0123) or enter 7-0123 if dialing from campus.

The Area Code section should be blank unless you are dialing long distance. The Country Code should be left on United States of America(1). Click on the Next button.

Click on finish. Click on Finish.

An icon labeled Dial UND PPP should have been created.

Proceed to STEP #2.

STEP #2: Configuring the Dial-up Icon

Right click on the icon and click on Properties. Highlight the Dial UND PPP icon by clicking it one time.

Under Advanced options and Allowed network protocols the only boxes that should be checked are "Enable software compression" and "TCP/IP".

STEP #3: You are ready to Dial

Enter e-mail address and password, click Connect. To start dialing, Click on My Computer, Click Dial-up Networking, double click the Dial UND PPP icon.
