PPP Dial-Up Access Using a Macintosh and OS8/9

Things You Will Need Before You Start:

  1. System 8+.
  2. An e-mail address on one of the following:  U-mail or with CAS or the School of Medicine. If you have not yet activated your U-mail account, visit the ITSS E-mail Information page: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/email.html
STEP #1: Configuring PPP

Enter your E-mail address, password and phone number Open the PPP or Remote Access (OS9) control panel. Enter your e-mail address (e.g. jsmith@badlands.nodak.edu. CAS users, enter your address as userid@dialup.aero.und.edu) in the Name field, and under Password enter the password to your e-mail account. Under number enter the phone number to the modem pool at UND (777-0123 or 70123 for on-campus).  Or the UND 15 minute modem pool (777-0125 or 70125 for on-campus).  (Note: If you have call waiting add *70, in front of the telephone number. This will disable call waiting while you are connected to 777-0123. If *70 does not work, try #50, or check with your telephone company for the appropriate code). Your window should look similar to the example but with your information filled in.

STEP #2: Configuring TCP/IP

Connect Via: PPP, Using PPP Server, Enter Name Servers Open the TCP/IP control panel. Choose Connect Via: PPP and Configure: Using PPP Server. Enter the name server addr: 134.129.201.29 and 134.129.111.111.  Click the close box (choose to save the changes when prompted).

STEP #3: Configuring Your Modem

Open the Modem control panel. Select your modem from the list (if your modem isn't listed, click on the question mark & follow the on-line help).

STEP #4: Connecting with PPP

Open the PPP control panel. To dial, click the Connect button and your modem should dial and make a connection.

STEP #5:  Once your dial-up software has been configured and you have established a connection, you will need to use software to explore the Internet and use e-mail.
To obtain an Internet browser (i.e. Netscape Navigator) or E-mail software (i.e. Eudora Light, Mulberry) see:
User Note #I6:  Downloading Macintosh Applications from the Web, or
User Note #I7:  Downloading Windows 95/98/NT Applications from the Web
To configure your E-mail software (i.e. Eudora Light, Mulberry) see:
User Note #E2:  Configuring Your E-mail Software for the U-mail System

Troubleshooting:

Problem: The modem starts to connect but the Status indicates an Authentication Failed message and you receive a warning that the connection attempt failed for either "User Authentication failed" or "The PPP connection was terminated unexpectedly" and the modem hangs up.

Either your login ID or your password is not correct. Verify that you are entering them properly and remember that entries are case sensitive. If you still have problems you can verify that your login ID and password are correct by going to one of the public labs on campus and using Web Access or Mulberry to log onto your account. If you are unable to login you will have to bring a picture ID to Upson II, room 366 and have your login ID and password verified or reset.

If you need other assistance, please contact the Help Desk at 777-2222.
