A telephone handset icon will appear on the menu bar.

There are a number of ways to connect to the Internet. One way is to start an Internet application such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. Although all methods accomplish the same thing we recommend one of the following:

Connect using the handset icon on the menu bar. Click the handset icon on the menu bar and choose Connect.
Disconnect using the handset icon on the menu bar.

The icon will be animated during the connection process. Once you are connected, the status information will say Modem: Connected and the Connect option now turns to Disconnect.

Connect using Internet Connect.

The other recommended method is to use the Internet Connect utility by choosing it from the handset icon on the menu bar or from the Applications window.

Click the Connect button.

Disconnect using Internet Connect.

The status of the process will display and once you are connected, the send and receive status bars will display.

Once your dial-up software has been configured and you have established a connection, you will need to use software to explore the Internet and use e-mail. To obtain an Internet browser (i.e. Netscape Navigator) or E-mail software (i.e. Eudora Light, Mulberry) see: User Note #I6: Downloading Macintosh Applications from the Web, or User Note #I7: Downloading Windows 95/98/NT Applications from the Web To configure your E-mail software (i.e. Eudora Light, Mulberry) see: User Note #E2: Configuring Your E-mail Software for the U-mail System

Troubleshooting:

Problem: The modem starts to connect but the Status indicates an Authentication Failed message and you receive a warning that the connection attempt failed for either "User Authentication failed" or "The PPP connection was terminated unexpectedly" and the modem hangs up.

Either your login ID or your password is not correct. Verify that you are entering them properly and remember that entries are case sensitive. If you still have problems you can verify that your login ID and password are correct by going to one of the public labs on campus and using Web Access or Mulberry to log onto your account. If you are unable to login you will have to bring a picture ID to Upson II, room 366 and have your login ID and password verified or reset.

If you need other assistance, please contact the Help Desk at 777-2222.
