PPP Dial-Up Access Using a Macintosh
with System 8.5+ (text version)
Things
you will need before you start:
An e-mail address on one of the following: U-mail, CAS, or the School of Medicine.
If you do not have an e-mail address please see User Note #E1: UND E-mail
System Activation Process..
The following are the steps
you will go through using the Internet Setup Assistant that comes with Mac OS
8.5+. Go to the Apple Menu, choose Internet Access, then choose
Internet Setup Assistant.
- Would you like to setup
your computer to use the Internet? Yes
- Do you already have
an Internet account? Yes
- Introduction... read
the information and Click the arrow to continue
- Name this configuration:
UND and choose Modem as your means of connecting.
- Choose your modem from
the list of modems and the appropriate port. Note: If you have an iMac you
will have an internal modem.
- Enter the phone number
for UND Dial-up Services: 777-0123
Enter your e-mail address as the log-in name: your_userid@hostname and
your e-mail password
- PPP Connection Scripts:
UND does not use a connection script, select No
- IP Address: UND's modems
will supply the IP address, select No
- Enter the Domain Name
Servers:
134.129.111.111
134.129.201.29
and the Domain name: nodak.edu
- What is the e-mail address
for this configuration? enter your e-mail address
What is the e-mail password for this configuratin? enter your password
What is the quoting character? leave the > as the character
- What is the e-mail address
for this configuration? once again enter your e-mail address
What is the e-mail host for this configuration? enter the part after the
@ sign in your address.
- Newsgroup host computer:
news UND does not provide a news server, leave setting as is.
- Do you use a proxy server?
No
- Conclusion: Select Go
Ahead
Once you have completed
the setup there are a number of ways in which you can make your connection.
- Remote Access from the
Control Strip
then select the configuration name (UND) from the pop-up menu.
- Remote Access is a Control
Panel located under the Apple Menu, select it and choose Connect.
Once your dial-up software
has been configured and you have established a connection, you will need to use
software to explore the Internet and use e-mail.
To obtain an Internet browser (i.e. Netscape Navigator) or
E-mail software (i.e. Eudora Light, Mulberry) see:

Note: The information you
entered into the Internet Setup Assistant is stored in the Remote Access and
Internet Control Panels. If you need to make any changes (e.g. you change the
password on your e-mail account so you have to change it for your dialup) you
may do so within those Control Panels.
