Creating a Spam Rule Using Outlook Express

Outlook Express only supports filtering for POP3. If you have IMAP as the protocol, OE does not filter, you can sort messages by clicking the Subject column heading .

To create a rule:

Click the Tools menu, choose Message Rules, then Mail.

  1. Choose to create a New Mail Rule and build the rule as follows:
    Select Conditions for your Rule:
Check "Where the Subject line contains specific words". The rule displays in text box #3.
  2. Select the Actions for your rule:
Check either "Delete It" or "Move it to the specified folder". If you choose to move it, the parameters will be added to the rule in text box #3.

  3. Complete the Rule Description
Click the underlined words, "contains specific words." Enter the text to filter on, e.g. {SPAM???}. Click Add, then OK.

If you selected "Move it to a specified folder" in step 2, you will need to choose the folder to move the messages to. Click the underlined word "specfied" and choose the folder from the list or click New Folder to create a "junk" folder. Enter the name and click OK.

  4. Enter a name for the rule.
    Click OK.

If you wish to apply the new rule to the messages already in your Inbox, click Apply Now.

Click OK to exit the rules screen. New messages with {SPAM???} in the subject line will now go to the folder specified (e.g. junk). You should check through the messages to be sure legitimate messages aren't being filtered out.
