Getting Started
'

Welcome to UND -- the following information will help get you started using the general campus e-mail and Internet access. For further assistance, please contact the ITSS Help Desk at 777-2222.

E-mail:

There are a number of systems available that provide e-mail to the UND community, ranging from U-mail the general campus e-mail system to department specific systems. Regardless of the mail package you use, as long as it has Internet access you can communicate with your colleagues not only here at UND but around the world. Some departments and schools (e.g. Aerospace and School of Medicine) provide their own e-mail. If you will be using one of these, contact the support person for the department/school.

If you will need an account on the general UND e-mail system (U-mail), you may activate the address via the web at http://itss.und.edu, choose the E-mail link.

Internet Access

You have a number of options, depending on where you will be accessing the Internet.

ResNet: If you live in one of the campus residential complexes, your Internet access is via the campus network. Support is provided by ResNet. Visit their web site for more information (http://www.resnet.und.edu/).

Dialup: If you live off-campus but are within a local phone call of Grand Forks, you may access the Internet using the UND modem pool. For configuration instructions and dialup numbers, go to: http://www.und.edu/dept/itss/Usernotes/UserIndex.html#internet.

Office on campus: Most offices are wired for ethernet connections. For assistance contact your department/college computer support staff or the ITSS Help Desk at 777-2222.

Wireless: Wireless access is available at a number of locations on campus, including the Memorial Union, Education, Gamble and Upson II. Instructions are available on-line.

Computer Labs

ITSS provides general purpose computing labs in the lower level of the Memorial Union and the third floor of the Chester Fritz library. Hours of operation and a listing of hardware and software available is located at http://www.und.edu/dept/itss/labinfo.html.

How do I access restricted services from off-campus?

Some library databases are restricted to UND use only, to access these web-resources from off-campus you will need to specify a proxy server within your browser. Instructions for the most common browsers are available at: http://www.library.und.edu/gethelp/remoteaccess.jsp.

Other services are available only to students within a specific major - see the computer support staff for that department for assistance.
