Pop-Up Blockers & Web Access

If you are unable to compose new messages or reply to messages, it may be due to a pop-up blocker. U-mail Web Access uses pop-up windows for the compose features. If you are using a pop-up blocker and experiencing problems sending messages, either disable the pop-up blocker, or add U-mail to the pop-up blocker's "Allow" list if it has one. You may also try pressing the CTRL key as you click the "Compose" or "Reply" button.

U-mail Web Access (iPlanet Messenger Express)

Attachments can be tricky. Attachments are encrypted and what type of encryption used depends on the e-mail software used to send the message. Three commonly used encryption methods are: MIME, Binhex, and UUencode. The software you use to read your e-mail must be able to unencrypt the attachment in order for you to use it. Once the attachment is unencrypted you also must have a software application (e.g. MS Word) that can read the file.

U-mail Web Access is able to unencrypt MIME & Binhexed attachments. The attachment name and information associated with it will appear below the e-mail header. Double-click on the attachment name. If your browser is able to determine what program is associated with the attached file it will either open the attachment or prompt you to choose to either open it or save it to disk. If the type is unspecified (in other words, the browser doesn't recognize the file extension and doesn't know what to do with it) you will be prompted to choose where to save the file.

Other Comments/Problems:
How to find help?
Individual questions may be directed to the ITSS lab staff and the Help Center at Upson II (777-2222 or itsshelp@mail.und.nodak.edu). If the Help Center staff aren't able to answer the question they will refer the call on to the U-mail administrative and support staff. Training is also offered, typically at the beginning of the semester. Training is announced in the University Letter and on the ITSS web site.

Sometimes the system is down and I can't get to my mail
We do try to schedule maintenance for early Friday mornings during the school year (summer hours vary). Network and hardware problems do pop up which makes the system unavailable during busy times  while we wait for replacement equipment, callbacks from customer support etc. We know that this is an inconvenience but sometimes unavoidable and we do try to minimize the down time as much as possible.

What is this quota I keep getting e-mail about?
Each person with an address on U-mail has a certain amount of space to store messages, otherwise known as their quota. The U-mail quotas are set at 30MB. E-mail messages themselves are quite small, typically it's attachments that cause the problem. You will be notified via e-mail messages when you start to approach your quota and on a frequent basis once you've exceeded your quota. If you are getting these quota messages, the only way to stop them is to free up space by deleting messages/attachments. If you need to retain attachments etc., they can be saved to a local disk/diskette.

Is there a size limit on outgoing messages?
There is a maximum message size for outgoing mail sent via the U-mail Web Access (http://und.nodak.edu). The limit is approximately 5MB. If you need to send an attachment larger than this, you may do so by using a POP or IMAP e-mail client, such as Outlook Express, Eudora or the Macintosh Mail software.
