Welcome to Modern & Classical Languages & Literatures

One world – many cultures

It is impossible to understand our own cultures without immersing ourselves in the stories and histories, songs and films, and living voices from other languages and cultures. Both for personal growth and for pursuing a wide range of careers (e.g., teaching, journalism, diplomacy, international organizations, engineering, business, etc.), thinking outside our cultural boxes through an in-depth understanding of different cultures stimulates the mind and prepares you not only for a successful career but also for a fulfilling life of adventure and exploration.

Gaining fresh perspectives, experiencing global cultures

Active scholars and experienced teachers, our faculty members take time to get to know and carefully advise each individual student. In our relatively small, student-centered classes, you are encouraged to find your own voice in a new language, to become a patient, careful, joyful reader as well as a creative and independent thinker and writer. Learning to understand current events, social issues, artistic achievements, and historical processes, as well as exploring (and even creating your own) poems, songs, stories and films, you will be able to look at the world from more than one perspective, constantly gaining fresh insights, and converse with people from all over the world. In addition to our energizing, award-winning classes at UND, we also take students to countries all over the world every year. Qualified students are eligible for generous departmental travel stipends.

Majoring/Minoring in Modern & Classical Languages & Literatures

Majors and minors are available in Chinese Studies, Classical Studies, French, German, Norwegian, Russian, and Spanish. Many students combine one of the language/culture majors with other majors/minors (History, Political Science, Engineering, Aviation, Business, Philosophy, Music, Arts, English, etc.).
