Dr. Colleen Berry
Assistant Professor of Chinese
(Ph.D., Indiana University)

Before arriving at UND, Colleen taught Chinese and Japanese at the University of Manitoba, worked as a tour guide in China for about twelve years, and has spent a total of over ten years working and studying in China (including Taiwan) and Japan. As a graduate student at Indiana (Bloomington), she was selected as a recipient of the Leiber Award for Outstanding Teaching for her work as a Assistant Instructor in Chinese language classes. Her areas of interest are Chinese literature, Chinese film, Second Language Acquisition, Gender Studies, and various aspects of Chinese history and culture. Her current research focuses on the work of the modern Hong Kong writer, Lilian Lee (Li Bihua) and on the intersection of classical and modern Chinese literature in Lee’s works. She is also working on issues in Chinese film comedy.

This year will mark Colleen’s fiftieth trip to China but she still gets just as excited about going to China as she did the first time. Teaching Chinese and watching students get motivated, as well as taking students to China are her favorite things about teaching at UND.
