Grand Forks, ND

A. Graduate students who wish to meet a scholarly tool requirement in Chinese, Classical Greek, French, German, Latin, Norwegian, Russian, or Spanish may do so by passing a reading test administered by the Languages Department. This test is offered twice a year: on Reading and Review day at the end of the fall semester, and on Reading and Review day at the end of the spring semester. To register for the exam, students must complete a simple two-step process: no fewer than 30 days before the examination date, they must meet with a member of the Languages Department faculty who teaches the language in question to discuss the format of the exam; then no fewer than 10 days before the examination date, they must place their names on the official examination list by contacting Mrs. Linda Ziegelmann, the department's Administrative Assistant, in Merrifield 317 (701-777-3813). Students may take the examination a maximum of three times at the Languages Department.

B. Upon the written recommendation of a student's graduate advisor, the Languages Department will explore the possibility of preparing a special reading examination in other languages taught by the department, but not mentioned above. Please note that the Languages Department cannot guarantee that it will offer such an examination, but only that it will consider doing so.

C. Students should be aware that it may be possible to satisfy the graduate language requirement in ways other than by taking an examination, or by passing a national standardized test instead of an examination administered by the Languages Department. Please consult the graduate catalog and your graduate advisor for details.
