1. John G. Arneberg Foreign Travel Scholarships
The purpose of these scholarships is "to encourage and improve education
in foreign languages, preferably the German, Scandinavian and French
languages," although awards have also been made to students of Greek,
Latin, Russian, and Spanish. John G. Arneberg stated that his
principal objective in establishing this trust was "to promote better
international relations through better knowledge and understanding of
the languages, customs, literature, art and traditions of other
countries," and he stipulated that scholarships were to be awarded to
University of North Dakota language students who had shown "exceptional
interest and proficiency in
the field." In recent years about twenty-five scholarships have been awarded
annually in amounts up to $3000. Applications are available from the
Department of Modern & Classical Languages in late November, and are
due back in mid-January. Awards are announced toward the end of
February.
