This class will focus on learning the Spanish language as it is used in a variety of medical situations for many personnel, i.e., general practitioners and specialists, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, medical receptionists, and paramedics, to name a few. Students will learn conversational exchanges typical of those in which the provider would come into direct contact with Spanish-speaking patients and clients. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish will all be practiced.

This is not simply a course in medical terminology. One of the key learning objectives will be familiarization with regional variances in language, vocabulary and, in particular, individual cultures that exist within the United States and throughout Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America. In order to best assist patients, it is important that medical personnel become familiar with these nuances in communication that vary from country to country.

This is truly a beginning class. It is not recommended that anyone who has completed more than one year of college-level Spanish take this course.
