Introductory Spanish offered online for fall semester
2009 Spanish 101 and
102 online are being offered for UND's fall semester, Aug. 25-Dec. 18,
2009. The fall 101 course will introduce a new electronic textbook
and other online resources with McGraw-HillÕs Dos Mundos (7th ed). The
102 course will use the Plazas textbook in the fall and then Dos Mundos (7th
ed) in
the spring semester. The only other requirements for Spanish 101 and 102
online are a high-speed Internet connection and a computer microphone. The online classes are intended
particularly for students whose circumstances might prevent or make it
difficult for them to attend regular language classes on campus. Students are
given scheduled assignments, quizzes and proctored exams, but are expected to
be able to set their own pace for daily study. Interactive online classroom
sessions will be offered regularly. Online Spanish
101 and 102 each incorporates numerous self-checking practice exercises or
review activities created by both McGraw-Hill and UND online instructional
designers. The courses also have numerous audio and video components featuring
native speakers from different countries and regions. Cultural and extra-credit
activities are part of most lessons. Registration
information is available through Campus Connection on the UND
home page www.und.nodak.edu . Every
attempt will be made to ensure that students now taking
Spanish online can, if they choose, continue the following semester. Independent-study
versions of Spanish 101 and 102 online, allowing nine months for completion of
a course, also are available. For info, contact UNDonline@mail.und.edu or 800-342-8230. Online Spanish
instructor Steve Schmidt (M.S.), is a UND graduate living in Minnetonka,
Minn. He wrote UNDÕs first online Spanish courses and has been both a classroom
and online Spanish teacher more than seven years. Schmidt also teaches with the
Minnesota Virtual Academy, a pioneering program for statewide distance learning
based in Houston, Minn. You may contact
him with questions about the online Spanish courses at 952-412-6333 or by
e-mail at steven.schmidt@und.nodak.edu. Illustration:
