INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION: The Netherlands News Periodicals were deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Mrs. Alexander C. Burr, Bismarck, North Dakota, December 28, 1984 (Acc.#89-1645). The material was transferred from the Alexander C. Burr Papers, OGL#998, to provide better access.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Netherlands News Periodicals consist primarily of two publications. Netherlands News was published by the Netherlands Information Bureau, New York City, from July 15, 1941, to January 1, 1946. The purpose of Netherlands News was to bring war news regarding the Netherlands and the Netherlands East and West Indies to the American public. It was published bi-monthly and offered articles regarding economic, political, cultural, and military developments, especially those which highlighted Dutch resistance to Nazism. It also contained pictorial supplements and cumulative indexes.

The Netherlands Information Bureau also published Netherlands News Digest bi-monthly from March 15, 1942 to January 15, 1945. At that time the two periodicals were amalgamated and readers of Netherlands News Digest received Netherlands News until it ceased publication. The purpose of Netherlands News Digest was similar to that of Netherlands News, but its format and size were different. It was smaller in size, more comprehensive in scope, and pictorially illustrated throughout each issue.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Netherlands News Periodicals consist almost exclusively of materials published by the Netherlands Information Bureau, New York City, during World War II. Included is an incomplete run of Netherlands News from 1941 to 1946, and a complete run of Netherlands News Digest from 1942 until 1945. Miscellaneous periodicals published by the Netherlands News Bureau include: Netherlands News Letter, 1946; Education in the Netherlands, 1942; Holland Carries On, Holland Carries On…The Netherlands East Indies, and Holland Carries On…The Netherlands West Indies, undated; Mein Kampf in Holland or Straight From the Horse’s Mouth, 1943; The Foreign Policy of the Netherlands, 1943; and Past and Future in the Netherlands Indies, 1945.

Only two publications in the collection were not published by the Netherlands News Bureau: the undated The Netherlands Indies was published by the Department of Economic Affairs of the Government of the Netherlands Indies, while Towards Economic Democracy in the Netherlands Indies by G.H.C. Hart was published by the Netherlands and Netherlands Indies Council of the Institute of Pacific Relations in 1942.

The Netherlands News Periodicals were transferred from the Alexander C. Burr Papers, OGL#998, to provide better access.
