The North Dakota Association for the Education of Young Children was formed at an organizational meeting on May 1, 1976 in Mayville, North Dakota. The group was officially certified as an affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children in March of 1977.
David Wright, Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education at Mayville State College, and Maurice Lucas, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of North Dakota, were both instrumental in the formation of the group.
The purpose of the association, as stated in their constitution, is "to serve and act on behalf of the needs, rights, and education of all young children". They seek to accomplish these goals by working for the passage of legislation beneficial to young children, such as establishing government funding for kindergartens in North Dakota schools, by conducting workshops and conferences designed to provide information on issues related to the care, development, and needs of young children, and by holding events, such as the Week of the Young Child, that draw attention to children's needs.
This collection includes correspondence, meeting minutes, newsletters, conference brochures, photographs, newspaper clippings, membership lists, and other materials generated by the activities of the Association. The materials date from 1976 to 1989.
The collection is divided into seven series. Series I contains correspondence on the initial organization of the Association, dating from 1976 to 1977, correspondence on establishing tax-exempt status, dating from 1976 to 1985, the constitution and by-laws, with revisions made through 1983, the general policy handbook, and handbooks on various NDAEYC activities.

Materials include correspondence and minutes.
Series III contains materials related to the annual Week of the Young Child, including correspondence, promotional materials, photographs, and newspaper clippings. These date from 1977 to 1988.
Series IV contains materials related to special projects of the organization, such as their efforts to establish state-supported kindergarten in North Dakota, efforts to achieve other legislation beneficial to young children, and the annual scholarship awarded by the association. These materials date from 1978 to 1988.
