ACQUISITION:The McCanna Farming Company Collection was deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection as a gift of Margery McCanna, granddaughter of the farm's founder, Simon McCanna, July 8, 1993. (Acc #93-1929)
ACCESS:Open for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.
This addition to the McCanna Farming Company Collection contains materials related to the farm's management from the time of Charles McCanna's death in 1957 through 1982, when Charles' nephew Ralph McCanna began to manage farm operations. During that time, the Farming Company underwent two significant changes. First, the McCanna Farming Company as a corporation was dissolved in 1960. Then, in 1976 the McCanna Farming Company Partnership was restructured. Documents pertaining to each change are contained in this addition. Also included are Charles McCanna's will and documents pertaining to his estate; mortgages, deeds, and land patents associated with property owned by the McCanna's (1885-1955); and a 1909 Grand Forks County plat book in which Charles McCanna recorded acres planted and crop returns for the period 1907-1928.
Many mortgages and deeds relate to the farm's 1934 refinancing through a Federal Land Bank loan. Other mortgages and deeds indicate that the farming company was busily involved land transactions during the first few years of the twentieth century. Especially interesting is a candid, four-page historical sketch of McCanna Farming Company written in 1960 by C.H. Erbele, farm manager from 1957-1972. Erbele's sketch, written to a Fargo banker, is located in the folder containing Charles McCanna Estate papers.
Material in this addition consists of one box. Farm management reports were contained in several envelopes, in roughly chronological order. Management records have been arranged chronologically. With the exception of those related to the Federal Land Bank loan, mortgages, deeds, and other property-related documents were bundled in no apparent order. These records have been left in the order in which they were bundled. Oversize records including land patents, homestead certificates, and warranty deeds have been placed in the appropriate OGL oversize drawer.
