INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION: The Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission Records were originally deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Sandy Slater, Grand Forks, North Dakota, on June 23, 1999 (Acc.#99-2236). Additions were received on numerous occasions: (Acc.#2000-2436), (Acc.#2000-2460), (Acc.#2002-2586), (Acc.#2003-2625), (Acc.#2003-2626), (Acc.#2003-2627), (Acc.#2004-2700), (Acc.#2004-2697), (Acc.#2004-2698), (Acc.#2004-2699), (Acc.#2005-2733) (Acc.#2005-2800) and (Acc.#2008-2922).

ACCESS: Open for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission was created in 1987 to oversee potential changes to historic properties and structures in Grand Forks. Since it was established it has kept many historic buildings from either being torn down or changed in a way that would fail to preserve their historical value.

The Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission is also involved in projects meant to recognize history in Grand Forks. For example, the commission was very involved in the Downtown Plaque Project. The Commission’s goal was to educate the public on the historical importance of many local buildings by placing plaques outside of them which contained historical information about each particular building.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission Records contain meeting minutes from 1987 through 2004, which includes all correspondence to and from the commission. Also found are documents related to the many projects that the Commission was involved with. The most extensive projects were the Northern Pacific Railroad Bridge, the Clifford Annex and Electric Construction buildings, the Metropolitan Opera House, Viets Hotel, and the many properties in Grand Forks that were damaged as a result of the 1997 Red River Flood.

The collection also contains the mitigation from the above projects and from other projects that the Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission handled. The mitigation includes historical facts, floor plans, black and white photographs with captions, and negatives. Some projects also include colored photographs, a video, or slides.

Also found are newspaper clippings on many topics of historical significance to Grand Forks. There are also photographs, negatives, and slides of the Metropolitan Opera House, photographs of the Clifford Annex Building and Electric Construction Building, negatives of the Security Building and Nash Brothers Building of North 3rd Street, and photographs of the Bismarck Heritage Center.

Separated from the collection and placed in the oversize file cabinets were floor plans of Belmont Elementary School, South Junior High School, the Campbell House, the Garage/Carriage House, the Wastewater Treatment Plant, and St. Michael's Hospital and Nurse's Residence.
