INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION: The Dead Dogs Collection was deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Betty Gard, Grand Forks, North Dakota on June 11 and June 21, 1999 (Acc.#99-2338).

ACCESS: Available for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.

HISTORICAL SKETCH

Dead Dogs was an independent film shot entirely in Grand Forks. The screenwriter, Todd Bulman, graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Arts and Sciences. The producer of the film, Todd's brother Regge, attended UND in 1986, before transferring to Montana State University. While in Montana, Regge Bulman met Clay Eide, who directed the film.

The film debuted at the Seattle International Film Festival on June 2, 1999. Of approximately 800 submitted films, Dead Dogs was one of 35 that were shown. The picture won the American Independent Award at the festival. Dead Dogs was also shown at the Chicago Alternative Film Festival, were it was only one of 22 films screened out of over 200 submitted. At this festival, Dead Dogs won the Best Feature Film award.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Dead Dogs collection consists of a program from the 25th Seattle International Film Festival, held from May 13 through June 6, 1999. Also included is a promotional postcard reporting the film's debut on June 2, 1999. Finally, a copy of the Variety magazine review of the film is included. The material was donated by Betty Gard of Grand Forks, who has a role in the film.
