This addition to the Edward Milligan Papers consists of a May 24, 1936, article from the New York Times. The article recounts an announcement by Milligan regarding the discovery of an artifact found in a gravel pit north of Grand Forks. Milligan was directing an excavation of Indian village sites for the Works Progress Administration, and he felt the artifact was a stone telescope of Mayan origin. Milligan felt the artifact was proof that the Mayans had emigrated to this area over 4,000 years ago.
Also included is a February 1949 paper written by Milligan and entitled Known Migrations of Historic Indian Tribes with an Introduction on Prehistoric and Protohistoric Movements in the Upper Mississippi-Missouri Area. In the preface to the paper, Milligan reports that the purpose of the paper was to reconcile certain differences in historic accounts of known migrations of historic tribes with archaeological evidence. The paper was also published by Milligan, and sold for 35 cents per copy.
