INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION: The Alvin C. Strutz Papers were deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Mrs. Alvin C. Strutz on October 27, 1977 (Acc. #77-461).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Alvin Carl Strutz was born on May 27, 1903, in Milbank, South Dakota to Robert and Emma (Kahl) Strutz. He was educated in Bismarck and Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1921. He attended Jamestown College and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1925. He next attended the law school at the University of North Dakota, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree in 1930. Strutz married Ina Vee Minor in 1930. The couple had three children: William, Donna, and Judith.

He practiced law in Jamestown from 1930-1933, and in Bismarck from 1933-1937. Strutz's first statewide office came with his appointment as Attorney General to replace P. O . Sathre in December 1937. He served in that post until he resigned to run for Governor in 1944. After his defeat he returned to private practice, establishing the firm of Strutz, Jansonius, and Fleck in Bismarck. Strutz continued in private practice until 1959 when he was appointed to the North Dakota Supreme Court to finish the term of the late Nels C. Johnson. Judge Strutz continued to serve on the Supreme Court until his death on June 16, 1973.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Alvin C. Strutz Papers date from 1959-1973 and are divided into three series as follows:

SERIES I: PERSONAL AND SUBJECT FILES, A-Z
This series consists of the personal and subject files of Alvin C. Strutz. Although predominantly a correspondence series, subjects with considerable amounts of material include Jamestown College, hunting matters, and the Strutz election campaign. The series is arranged alphabetically and covers the years 1959-1967. Box 1, Folder 1 - Box 3, Folder 17

SERIES II: LIONS INTERNATIONAL
Series II consists of correspondence and subject files relating to Judge Strutz's involvement with the Lions International. Judge Strutz joined the Bismarck Lions Club in 1935. Among the posts he held were Key Member, Master Key Member, President, Zone Chairman, Deputy District Governor and District Governor. The bulk of the material in this series revolves around his position as District Governor in the early sixties. The series is arranged alphabetically by subject and covers the years 1959-1973. SERIES III: JUDICIAL OPINIONS AND SPEECHES This series consists of judicial opinions and speeches delivered by Judge Strutz. The bulk of the material are the released opinions of the North Dakota Supreme Court, 1959-1973. The opinions are arranged first followed by the speeches. Box 5, Folder 1, - Box 7, Folder 12
