INTRODUCTION

ACQUISITION: This addition to the Maxwell Anderson Papers was deposited in the Orin G. Libby Manuscript Collection by Larry Hill, Department of Speech and Theater, Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, North Carolina, on August 1, 1989 (Acc.#89-1669).

ACCESS: Open for inspection under the rules and regulations of the Department of Special Collections.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Maxwell Anderson Papers consists of brochures, pamphlets, and twelve video tapes which contain footage from the Maxwell Anderson Theatre and Design Conference held at U.N.D, October 14-16, 1983. The videos have been placed in the Department's Video Tape Collection. They contain lectures on designs and lighting, panel discussions, and a review of the collection, "Maxwell Anderson; Designs From The Premiere Productions."

Also included in the addition are 267 slides which illustrate costume and set designs from Anderson's various plays dating from 1924-1958. The slides have been placed in the Slide Collection. An excerpt of the Maxwell Anderson's essay, The Essence of Tragedy and Other Footnotes and Papers is included, and is titled "Recognition Scene."

Four photographs were separated and added to the Orin G. Libby Photograph Collection. They include three photographs of Maxwell Anderson at the premiere of one of his plays and one photograph of a costume design from The Golden Six (1958).

267 slides were separated and added to the Slide Collection. The slides are views of set designs, costume designs, play logos and stage floor plans from 18 of Anderson's plays. The slides are arranged alphabetically by play title, and the slides for each play are divided into groups of costume designs, stage floor plans, play logos, and set designs. The dates range from 1925 to 1958. There are several unidentified slides at the end of the collection.
