HISTORICAL SKETCH

The first public school in Grand Forks was organized in 1873 by a teacher named Hattie Richmond. The first school was attended by eight students in a one room school house obtained through public subscription. A rapidly expanding population resulted in the organization of Grand Forks County in 1874 and calls for a new school facility. The Grand Forks County Commissioners provided for two county school districts in 1874. The city's population grew from a few hundred people in 1875 to more than 1,700 people, according to the 1880 Federal Census. The Grand Forks School Board was organized in 1881, following the provisions of an act of the Territorial Council. The Board held its first meeting on March 17, 1881.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Grand Forks Public School District Records date from 1881-1961, and consist of the meeting minutes of the Grand Forks School Board. The minutes are entered chronologically in twelve bound volumes. Also included are loose annual reports, treasurer's reports, and other communications to the Board from citizens and other agencies. Most entries until 1910 were handwritten, with typewritten entries thereafter.
