TOOLBOX
July 1-3, 2008

Instructor
Albert Bickford, Linguistic consultant and SIL-UND Director

Summer Institute of Linguistics and University of North Dakota

Course Overview

An introduction to the Toolbox computer program and its use for lexical databases and annotation of interlinear texts in the documentation of lesser-studied languages. Classes will primarily consist of lectures and demonstrations of Toolbox's capabilities, with opportunities for student practice on standardized data sets or their own data during optional supervised lab times. Will include general concepts and principles applicable to use of computers for linguistic research and brief mention of other related software. Some practical assistance in setting up the software on students' own Windows NT/XP computers (or Mac/Linux computers which can emulate Windows XP) will be provided. Participants should each have their own computer or a USB memory drive with at least 30 MB of free storage space. Some individual consultation will also be available to help students who have already used Toolbox extensively on their own data and have specialized questions.

Getting started

To get started using Toolbox in this course, do the following.

  • Download and install the Toolbox program on your computer. (This has already been done for you on the computers in the lab). http://www.sil.org/computing/toolbox/InstallToolbox153.exe
  • Download one or both of the following sets of practice files to your own computer or to a thumb drive that you can use on the lab computers. Unzip them to some convenient place.

·         If you want to practice first with some data from Seri, download the Seri practice files.

·         If you have your own data that you want to work with, download the sample setup files for starting a new project.

  • If you need to display special characters and do not have a Unicode font with the characters that you need, download and install one or both of the following fonts (both are free):

·         Doulos SIL: the font installed in the computer lab

·         Charis SIL: a more refined font with the same characters as Doulos, but also available in italic, bold, and bold italic.

  • For keyboarding special characters, there are basically three options:

·         Use the Windows Character Map utility (Start, Run: “charmap.exe”)

·         Use a standard Windows keyboard that has the characters you need, or a custom Windows keyboard made with the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator.

·         Use a custom keyboard with Tavultesoft Keyman, shareware program that provides more flexibility than built-in Windows keyboards. There are many such keyboards available for download at the Tavultesoft website, including my own general-purpose BU keyboard.
