SIL at the University of North Dakota administers
a scholarship fund designated for those
interested in doing advanced study in the Linguistics program at UND
and who specialize in
literacy and education in developing nations.
This scholarship program is applicable to
those taking eligible courses at SIL-UND,
and will be
awarded based on the intentions of the grant donor.
Purpose of the program
This fund has been established for two reasons:
- To attract qualified people to do advanced study in the field of literacy in
developing nations and,
- To encourage qualified people to do further professional work in this field.
Eligibility
Eligibility for grants and stipends from the fund will be based upon evidence of a
commitment to do work in literacy and minority language education in developing countries.
In addition to this eligibility standard, additional consideration will be given based
onto the following factors (none of which is required):
- Previous experience in the field;
- Evidence of a desire to do advanced study or research at UND leading to a
degree;
- Membership in an organization that will facilitate a student's commitment to work in literacy;
- Contribution to the professional discipline.
Country of citizenship is not a factor in determining eligibility.
Grants will not be made for preliminary or prerequisite coursework preparing one to
take advanced studies in literacy and minority language education.
Grants will apply only to study and related work done at SIL-UND.
Amount of grants and stipends
Grants will range from $300 to $1,000 depending upon need, the extent to which the student
meets the eligibility criteria, and availability of funds.
Grants will normally not be cash amounts directly to the recipient,
but will be applied against fees and expenses incurred as a student at SIL-UND.
