Richard Saunders Pittman (1915-1998) was a visionary and pioneer of SIL International, helping develop partnerships with universities and governments of the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Nepal, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and Indonesia. Dr. Pittman opened the first SIL program at the University of North Dakota in 1952 and served as its director from 1952 until 1972. Together with his wife Kay, remembered for her generous hospitality and geniality, Dr. Pittman laid an enduring foundation and gave shape to this program which continues today to draw students and faculty from all parts of the world. We dedicate the 1999 volume of the SIL-UND Work Papers to Dr. Pittman, in gratitude for his service to the program in linguistics at the University of North Dakota and to minority language groups around the world.
