LTC James K. Sickinger
Professor of Military Science & Fighting Sioux Batallion Commander
LTC Kevin Sickinger was born in Richmond, VA on 14 November 1962 and graduated from Benedictine High School in 1981. In May 1986, he graduated from the University of Richmond with B.A. in Criminal Justice. In 1987, upon completion of basic training at Fort Knox, KY he attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA. Upon Graduation, he was commissioned as a 2LT in the Military Police Corps. His initial assignment after completing the Officer Basic Course was in Korea where his duties included platoon leader and maintenance officer with the 557th Military Police Company. After completion of this tour, he was assigned to Fort Hood, TX where his duties included platoon leader with the 502nd and 545th Military Police Companies. After completing the Military Police Officer Advanced course, he was reassigned to Korea where he commanded the 552nd Military Police Company. After command, he was reassigned to the 728th Military Police Battalion as the Logistics Officer and Headquarters Company Commander. In 1995, he was assigned to Fort Bragg, NC to attend training at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare center. He received his M.S. in International Relations from Troy State University in 1996 and completed other military training in 1997. His first assignment as PSYOP Team Leader was on a Humanitarian De-mining mission in Zimbabwe. After several deployments he was re-assigned to the Special Warfare Center as the Psychological Operations Officer Course instructor. His next assignment was to FT Riley, KS as the Executive Officer of the 924th Military Police Battalion and the Fort Riley Deputy Provost Marshal. In May 2002, he was assigned to the United States Army in Europe Provost Marshal's Office, Security Operations Branch. His assignments in the security operations Branch included Senior Personnel Security Programs Chief and Project Officer for the Installation Access Control Program. In August 2004, he was selected to deploy to Afghanistan with the Southern European Task Force (SETAF) and commanded the Detainee Operations Battalion, Task Force Cerberus. While deployed in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM, he was selected as the commander of the Fighting Sioux Battalion and Professor of Military Science and Leadership for the University of North Dakota.
LTC Sickinger's military education includes the Military Police Officer Basic and Advanced courses; Junior Officer Maintenance Course; Physical Security and Combating Terrorism Courses; Airborne and Jumpmaster School; Psychological Operations and Civil Affairs Officer Courses; Combined Arms Service Staff School and Command and General Staff College.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal(3), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal(2), Army Achievement Medal (2), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon(4), and U.S. and German Airborne wings.

MAJ Joe Holman
Assistant Professor of Military Science & Fighting Sioux Battalion Executive Officer
MAJ Joe Holman is a Yooper – meaning he was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan; born in Negaunee on 1 November 1956, graduated Negaunee H.S. in 1974. He graduated from Northern Michigan University in May 1978 with a teaching certificate and degrees in History and Social Studies and was commissioned as an Infantry 2LT.
He immediately left for FT Benning Georgia where he completed his Officer Basic Course, Ranger and Airborne Schools. His initial assignment was Mechanized with the 5th Infantry Division at FT Polk, LA where his duties included Platoon Leader and Executive Officer of A Company, 3-11 Infantry; Battalion Motor Officer of 3-70 Armor battalion; and Executive Officer of Combat Support Company 3-70 Armor. While Executive Officer of A/3-11, he led the advanced party and participated in the Humanitarian Service mission at FT Chaffee, AR in response to the Cuban Boat Lift. After graduating 3rd in the Air Defense Artillery Advanced Course at FT Bliss, Texas and the Junior Officer Maintenance Course at FT Knox, KY, he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii where he was both a Light Infantry Company Commander and Battalion Motor Officer in the 1-27 Infantry (Wolfhounds). While with the Wolfhounds he participated in two Team Spirit deployments to South Korea and a Balakatan deployment to the Philippines. After departing Hawaii, he next taught ROTC at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI. While there he taught the MS I & III classes, various labs, and was the Recruiting Operations Officer. His next duty station was at FT Knox, KY where he was the ROTC 2nd Region Recruiting Operations Officer and then became the Battalion Executive Officer of the 2-46 Infantry Basic Training Battalion. In May, 1991 he received his M.S. in Education from the University of Louisville. From there, he returned to Hawaii to become the Chief of Plans & Operations for the U.S. Army, Pacific’s Operational Readiness & Evaluation Team. In this capacity he conducted evaluation exercises for active guard and reserve combat arms units across the Pacific including Alaska, Guam, American Samoa, and Hawaii. In his final assignment before retirement, he was the Infantry Team Chief at Readiness Group Snelling responsible for training Infantry guard units in Minnesota and Iowa. He retired on 1 November, 1995.
On 1 October, 2007, MAJ Holman was voluntarily Recalled to active duty from Retired status and assigned as an Assistant Professor of Military Science and Executive Officer of the Fighting Sioux Battalion for the University of North Dakota.
MAJ Holman’s military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic and Air Defense Artillery Advanced courses; Ranger and Airborne Schools; Junior Officer Maintenance Course; Combined Arms Service Staff School and Command and General Staff College.

MAJ Darron Tolan
Assistant Professor of Military Science & Fighting Sioux Battalion Training Officer
Major Darron Tolan graduated from the University of Montana in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and was tendered a commission in the United States Army. He graduated, as class Platoon Leader, from the United States Army Engineer Officer Basic Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri in 1991 and was assigned to the Montana Army National Guard as Commander of the 94 Soldier Detachment 1, 1063rd Combat Engineer Company, 163rd Heavy Separate Brigade. In conjunction with this assignment, he performed three 8-month incremental assignments as 1st Platoon Leader/Engineer Advisor to the Infantry, 2nd Platoon Leader/Engineer Advisor to the Armor, and Assault Bridge and Barrier Platoon Leader. These assignments culminated in qualifying the Company’s Combat Engineer Vehicle (CEV) Team on 8 tank range tables during Operation Bold Shift, 1992. After relinquishing Detachment Command in 1992, Major Tolan moved on to become an Armor Platoon Leader, D Company, 2-163rd Heavy Separate Brigade. Later, Major Tolan left the Montana Army National Guard. And in 1996, he joined the 889th Quartermaster Company, 96th RRC, United States Army Reserve as the Supply Operations Platoon Leader which concluded with a rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC), attached to the 6th Infantry Division (L). Major Tolan then assumed Company Command of the 889th Quartermaster Company in late 1997 and graduated the Quartermaster Officer Advanced Course, Fort Lee, Virginia in 1999. During his tenure, the 889th Quartermaster Company succeeded in training missions such as the closure of Fort Clayton/Fort Sherman, Panama in 1999 and a National Training Center (NTC) Rotation in March 2000, attached to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team (BCT) of the 1st Armored Division. Major Tolan graduated Combined Arms and Services Staff School in 2002 while assigned as the S-4 for the 370th Quartermaster Battalion (WS), 96th RRC, United States Army Reserve. In March 2003, Major Tolan was mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom 1 with the 244th Engineer Combat Battalion (H), 96th RRC, United States Army Reserve. He deployed with the 244th Engineer Combat Battalion (H), Operationally Attached to the 4th Infantry Division, where he served as Equipment Platoon Leader for Headquarters Support Company (HSC) and then later as the Battalion Maintenance Officer (BMO) with additional duties such as Battalion Unit Movement Liaison Officer, Reports of Survey Officer, Summary Court Martial Officer, and Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. Upon his return from Iraq, MAJ Tolan served as the Plans and Operations Officer (S3) for the 370th QM Battalion (WS), 96th RRC, United States Army Reserve. He then served as an Assistant Professor of Military Science (APMS) at the University of Montana, 8th Brigade (SROTC), 104th Division Institutional Training (IT), 84th Training Command (LR), United States Army Reserve. Major Tolan was mobilized again in the fall of 2008 to the United States Army Engineer School (USAES) attached as Chief, Tactics Division with duties ranging from Instructor/Writer and Accreditation Preparation Lead to Observer/Trainer. Currently, he serves as Assistant Professor of Military Science (APMS) at the University of North Dakota, home of the United States Army Helicopter Flight Training Program (HFTP). Major Tolan is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College - ILE, Engineer Captains Career Course, Army Basic Instructors Course & Small Group Leader Course and also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) Degree from Regis University, Denver, Colorado.
His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (4 OLC), the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (w/“M” device, “2”device, & Bronze Hour-Glass), the National Defense Service Medal (w/Gold Star), the Army Reserve Overseas Training Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Expert Rifle, Pistol, and Grenade Medal, and the Overseas Service Bar (2nd award).

CPT Shawn Flemmer
Scholarship Officer
CPT Flemmer was born in Beulah, ND on 8 August 1978 and graduated from BeulahHigh School in 1997. In 1996, CPT Flemmer enlisted as a mechanic in the North Dakota National Guard and attended Basic Combat Training in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. He continued his training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland where he participated in Advanced Individual Training for Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic School. After serving 4 years as an enlisted soldier, CPT Flemmer completed Officer Candidate School on 18 August 2000 where upon he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. His initial assignment, after OCS, was as a Combat Engineer Platoon Leader for the 141st Engineer Combat Battalion. Upon completion of Engineer Officer Basic Course in 2001 at Ft. Leonard Wood, CPT Flemmer was reassigned to the Detachment 2 141st Engineer Combat Battalion as a Detachment Commander from September 2002 to January 2003 whereby he continued his duties as a Active Duty Platoon Leader and Executive Officer with the 319th Security Forces Squadron at Grand Forks AFB, Grand Forks, ND in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM till December 2004. Afterwards, he then proceeded to return to the 141st Combat Engineer Battalion as the Battalion S1 Officer and Recruiter and in September 2005, he assisted in the reorganization of the S1 at the 231st Engineer Combat Battalion. Prior to his mobilization to Iraq, CPT Flemmer was the North Dakota National Guard Recruiting Operation Officer for the Bison and Sioux Battalions located in Fargo and Grand Forks, North Dakota. He has since returned to North Dakota this past spring 2008 to the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux Battalion as a Scholarship Officer.
CPT Flemmer’s military education includes the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Military Customs Inspector School, Engineer Command and Staff Course and Recruiting Operation Officer Training.
His awards and decorations include, Defense Meritorious Service Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal Ribbon, Army Commendations Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal (One Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Service Ribbon, Mechanics Badge, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon (One Oak Lead Cluster), National Guard Recruiting Excellence Badge, German Armed Forces Efficiency Badge, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (One Oak Leaf Cluster) and the National Defense Service Medal.

1LT Scott Reed
Assistant Professor of Military Science
1LT Scott D. Reed was born in Deer River, MN on 4 July 1893 and Graduated from Deer River High School in 2001. On 26 November 2002 he enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard as a Carpentry and Masonry Specialist. In Aug 2006 he graduated from the University of North Dakota with a B.S. in Recreation and Leisure Services, and completed the Army ROTC program. Upon completion he was branched as an Engineer officer in the North Dakota Army National Guard. His First duty assignment was Detachment Commander for Det 2, Alpha Company, 142nd Engineer Battalion. In 2007 he was transferred to the 817th Engineer Company (Sapper) in Jamestown, North Dakota and deployed to Iraq in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. In 2008 he returned and was hired on as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at The University of North Dakota.
1LT Reed’s Military education includes Basic and Advanced Individual Training, Air Assault School, Rappel Master School, and Basic Engineer Officer Leadership Course.

MSG Keith Beauchamp
Senior Military Science Instructor
MSG Beauchamp was born 10 August 1953 in Marquette, Michigan and graduated from Marquette Senior High School in June 1971 having participated in 3 years of Air Force Jr. R.O.T.C. He completed BCT & Infantry AIT December 1971. January 1972 until April 1972 he was assigned to Ft Benning, GA as an Assistant Instructor in support of the Infantry School. In May of 1972 he reported to the Republic of Vietnam. He served as a Riflemen recon platoon, E Co 1/12th Cav 1st Cav Div, M 60 Gunner B Co 1/ 7th Cav 1st Cav Div, Infantryman E Co 14th Inf and H Trp 10th Air Cav. March 1973 - December 1974 he served as an Infantry Squad Leader C Co 1/2nd Inf 1st Inf Div (M) Ft Riley, KS with two deployments to Germany. January 1975 he was assigned as an Infantry Squad Leader to B Co 1/ 5th Inf 25th Infantry Div, Schofield Barrack, HI with a deployment to Guam as part of Operation New Life. Later in 1976 with the introduction of the TOW Weapons System he attended NET training and became a TOW Section Leader. 1978 he was assigned to HHC USATCE Ft Leonardwood, MO and served as Test Supervisor, Training NCO, and finally as an Opns Sgt with DPTS Training Division. In 1982 he returned to the 25th Inf Div. He served as an Asst Bde Opns Sgt S3 1st Bde 25th Inf Div with duties as the Bde Resourse Manager and NCOIC Bde Jump TOC. This duty included a deployment to South Korea. In 1984 he served as Tow Platoon Ldr/PSG and Acting 1SG with CSC 1/27th Inf including a deployment to the Republic of the Philippines and Ft Lewis, WA. 1985 he was assigned to the 7th Inf Div (L) as a G3 Asst Opns Sgt with duty as the Reserve Component Liaison NCOIC responsible for coordination of all 228 RC units affiliated units geographically reaching from the Mississippi River to the West Coast of the US. In the fall of 1986 he was reassigned to the G3 of the 70th Training Div USAR serving as the Full-Time Manning Opns Sgt. 1990 he was assigned to the 5th Inf Div as a Bn OPNS SGT. September 1991 he retired as a MSG.
His military education includes Basic Combat Training and Advanced Infantry Training courses; Basic Leaders Course; Basic NCOES Infantry (Honor Graduate); Recondo School 25th Inf Div (Distinguished Graduate); TOW NET Training; Advanced NCOES Infantry (Distinguished Graduate); Platoon trainers Course; Battalion training Management Course; Infantry Operation SGT's Course; and Bradley Fighting Vehicle NET Training.

SFC Stephen Pittman
Military Science Instructor
SFC Steve Pittman was born in Asheville NC on 24 November 1964 and graduated from Owen High School in 1983. After completion of basic training, advanced training and airborne school in 1987, he was assigned to the 8th INF Div in Germany. In 1989 he was reassigned to 101st Airborne Div at Ft Campbell KY. In 1992 he was reassigned to the 82nd Airborne Div at Ft Bragg NC. From 1993 to 1994, he served a one year tour with the 2nd INF Div in Korea. In 1994 to 1996, he was back with the 82nd Airborne. In 1996 he was reassigned to the 6th INF (LIGHT) at Ft Wainwright Alaska. In 1999, he was reassigned to Ft Sill OK as a small arms instructor for the basic training units. In 2003 he was reassigned to the 1st Armored Div in Germany. In 2007 he was selected to be the Military Science Instructor at the University of North Dakota for ARMY ROTC.
His military education includes Infantry basic and advanced courses; Primary Leadership Development Course; Basic Non Commissioned Officer course; Advanced Non Commissioned Officer Course; Airborne, Air Assault and Jumpmaster course; Army Instructor Course; Jungle Operations course; Cold Weather Survival Course; Anti- Terrorism Course.
SFC Pittman has had three combat tours, all in Iraq, starting with Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom 1 and 2, and multiple deployments to Panama, Egypt, and Germany.

Mrs. Trudy Soli
Office Manager and HFTP Administrator
Trudy Soli was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on May 1st, 1959. She grew up in East Grand Forks, MN and graduated from EGF Senior High School in 1977. She attended Aakers Business College and graduated in 1978 with a degree in Stenographic Business.
Trudy worked at EGF Sr High School while attending high school and college from Nov 1974 - Aug 1978. From 1976 - 1978 she also worked part time at White Mart Department Store. She was offered a job as Principal’s Secretary at Central Junior High School in EGF, MN in Aug 1978 and worked there until Aug 1982; when she took a year leave of absence. She never did return to that position. She started her own daycare in Thompson, ND which she ran from Mar 1983 until Oct 1986. She also worked for McDaniel Stenographic Services where she worked part time in numerous short term jobs from 1985-1986. She then applied at Army ROTC, Univ of North Dakota and was offered the secretary job; started 6 Oct 1986 and has been there ever since. She started out doing physicals and NAC’s and has worked herself up to the Office Manager and HFTP Administrator. She does not plan on retiring any time soon.
In 1993, she received the Univ of North Dakota Meritorious Service Award and in 2003 she recieved the Commanders Award for Public Service.
Trudy has volunteered in numerous positions to include at Valley Elementary School as teacher’s assistant; Girl Scout Leader; Soccer coach; baseball coordinator; at church as Sunday School Teacher, Confirmation Leader, Sunday School Superintendent, Volunteer Coordinator, Wedding Coordinator, Bible study group coordinator and on church council. Her focus these past years has been coordinating and sending packages letters and e-mails to soldiers overseas.
Trudy married Mike Soli in July 1979 and made their home in East Grand Forks, MN. They have three children; Jason, Tyler, and Nicole (husband-Nathan Blair); from them we have one grandson-Nolan born April Fools Day 2007 and one granddaughter, Addison born Jan 09. |

Mr. Steve Joslyn

Stephean (Steve) S. Joslyn was born in Concordia, Kansas on June 13th, 1950. He moved with his parents to Tacoma, Washington in October 1965 and attended Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington.
Mr. Joslyn joined the United States Army on 1 March 1968. He attended Basic Training at Fort Lewis, Washington and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Ord, California. He was assigned to Fort Lawton, Washington for a year. Then he attended Computer School at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He was assigned to William O. Darby Kasern in Western Germany from 19 August 1969 until May 1970 and was transferred to TACCOM Support Activity Schweinfurt, West Germany until 12 October 1973. He was assigned to the United States Army Communications Command at Fort Ritchie, Maryland until 11 January 1976. Mr. Joslyn was reassigned to the Regional Personnel Center Schweinfurt, West Germany from 12 January 1976 until 20 August 1985. On 21 August 1985 he was assigned to Army Reserve Officer Training Program at Suffolk University, Boston, Massachusetts. He retired honorably from the United States Army on 1 March 1988 and moved to Graham, Washington. Mr. Joslyn then went to work for Cadet Management at Western Region, Fort Lewis, Washington and on 27 August 1997 he moved to North Dakota to work at the Department of Military Science, Army ROTC, University of North Dakota.
Mr. Joslyn has attended various military schools to further his career enhancement and continues to attend classes at University of North Dakota to further his professional development. He has received numerous awards while serving in the military to include Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medals, Good Conduct Medals, NCO Development Ribbons, Overseas Service Ribbons and National Defense Service Ribbons. He has also received the Achievement Medal for Civilian Service.
Steve Joslyn has 3 daughters, (Frieda, Sonja-Marie and Shawna). Mr. Joslyn is married to the former Paulette Marie Fielding of Yearington, Nevada. Together, with her children (Christopher, Kelly and Jenny) Paulette and Steve have 16 grand children. |

Mr. Russell Myers
Supply Technician
Russell Myers was born on November 26, 1959 in Fernandina Beach, FL.
In 1978 Russell enlisted in the Army and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He attended advanced individual training the same year at Fort Lee, VA. He attended Central Texas College from 1983 – 1985.
As a Unit Supply Specialist (92Y), Russell’s first duty station was Camp Hovey, Korea with the 1-23 Infantry (Tomahawks). In 1990, while part of the 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized), Russell deployed to Iraq and is a veteran of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Russell attended Basic Non-commissioned Officer Course (BNOC) at Ft. Lee, VA in 1992. In 1994, he attended Advanced Non-commissioned Officer Course (ANOC). In June of 1997, Russell left the Army.
Russell joined the Fighting Sioux Battalion at the University of North Dakota on December 18, 2006. As the supply technician, he attended and graduated the US Army Cadet Command Logistics Course in 2007. He is certified as a Lima Six Sigma white belt.
Russell has 3 children, Sasha (14), Russell (14), Richard (12), and Satoya (3). |
