FIDC
Teaching-Related Travel Grants
Faculty
involved in teaching-related projects that require
travel to professional conferences or workshops
may apply for travel support through the FIDC.
Because travel funds are limited, projects must
be directly related to teaching (pedagogy) in higher education. There are two types of teaching related travel:
- travel to conferences for pedagogical development that can be brought back to specific
classes at UND (for example: participating
in a teaching-related workshop, where the
faculty member will learn new techniques or
approaches; or learning
about new and innovative ways of teaching
one's subject )
- travel to make Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) presentations dealing with research on college level teaching (for example: making
a professional presentation on a teaching method you have conducted research on in your classroom at UND)
Travel for the sole purpose of keeping up with
one's subject or updating course content cannot
be supported with FIDC funds.
However, funding for travel related to new course
or curriculum development projects may be available
under the Flexible
Grants program (call OID for further information).
Funding for travel is limited to
$1,000 per trip ($1,500 for intercontinental travel).
Funds can go towards transportation, lodging,
meals and conference registration expenses. There is
no limit on how many times faculty may seek
FIDC funding. However, when funds are tight,
preference will be given to faculty who have
not had recent funding for similar requests.
How
and When to Apply
Proposals must be submitted prior
to travel. The Faculty Instructional
Development Committee meets monthly to review
and act on proposals on hand by noon
on the 1st of the month. Normally,
applicants can expect to get a response from
the committee within two weeks.
You may wish to discuss your proposal with the
Director of Instructional Development before
you submit it. If so, contact her by phone at
7-4233 or by e-mail at anne_kelsch@und.nodak.edu at least one week before the proposal deadline.
Proposal
Format
Proposals should be clear, complete & well organized with the following four sections (in this order):
I. A cover sheet which is found here.
(Copy this form from our website and paste
it into your word processing program. Then
enter the information and print it out from
your own computer.)
II. A one-page memo that provides a persuasive rationale for teaching-related travel funds.
- If
you are making a SoTL presentation,
include an abstract of your presentation
and explain how it grows out of your
teaching at UND.
- If
you are participating in pedagogical development -- a teaching-related
conference/workshop or similar activity -- please include a copy of the
conference/workshop flier or
an appropriate web address. Explain
the nature of the activity and what you
expect to gain from it. Clearly articulate how this conference experience will benefit students and/or other faculty at UND (in terms of courses taught, number of students affected, and ways you will share with other faculty). Successful pedagogical development proposals have clearly identified the type of pedagogy sought and how it will be incorporated into the classroom at UND.
III. An
itemized travel budget that lists:
- An
estimate of your total travel expenses
(including transportation, lodging,
meals, and conference registration)
- The
amounts you have received or are seeking
from other sources (e.g., your department,
dean, RD&C)
- The amount
you are requesting from FIDC (same as
on cover sheet)
IV. A
supporting letter from your department chair,
explaining what the department is able to
contribute in support of this project and/or
why outside support is necessary. (If you
are chair, ask for a letter from your dean.)

Send
or bring the application to:
The Office
of Instructional Development, O'Kelly 300, Stop
7104. One copy is sufficient. (Supporting letters
may be submitted with the application or via
e-mail at oid@und.nodak.edu.
Either way, they must arrive by noon
of the 1st. Electronic supporting
letters must be received separately and directly
from the reference.
Final
Reports
FIDC
and Flexible Grant recipients are required to file
a final report that addresses how the pedagogical activity will benefit the university . Final reports are
generally due within six months of notification.
Records on final reports are kept in the OID office and if a faculty member is applying for
another grant, the final report must be filed before
the new grant proposal can be acted on. Click
here for Final
Report Guidelines. |
