The New Faculty Teaching Seminar
Sponsored by OID and the Bush Foundation
A program for early-career faculty

Extended Application Deadline: February 15, 2005

Program Description

The New Faculty Teaching Seminar is a program designed to assist early career faculty in developing their knowledge and skills as college teachers.

The program begins with a six-day workshop in June. Drawing on Dee Fink's book Creating Significant Learning Experiences, ten participants will develop student learning objectives, explore teaching strategies, and design assessments for a course to be taught in the Fall.

Beginning in August, the group will meet at least four more times to share ideas and materials, report on progress, and share results of the teaching experience. The final meeting will be in January 2006.

Stipend

To support their participation in this project, each Teaching Colloquium participant will receive a stipend of $1500--half to be paid at the end of the May workshop and half the following January, when the final project report is filed.

Eligibility

Note:
An earlier announcement limited eligibility to faculty with fewer than three years teaching experience. We are now opening the program to all untenured UND faculty.

Dates and Commitments

The 2005 summer colloquium will run from June 15-17, 20-22. Meeting times are 9-3 each day, but since there will also be outside reading and preparation, applicants should not have other commitments during this time. Meetings during the following year will be arranged to accommodate the schedules of the faculty.

Selection Process

A special committee made up of Bush Teaching Scholars will review applications and make selections based on the strength of the applicant's letter, the chair's recommendation, and the make-up of the group as a whole.

How to Apply

Applications for the 2005 New Faculty Teaching Seminar are due February 1, 2005,
and should include the following:

  1. A curriculum vitae or resume.
  2. A 1-2 page letter that addresses the following questions:
    • Why do you wish to participate in the New Faculty Teaching Seminar? How would the experience fit into your professional plans and priorities?
    • What Fall 2004 course do you propose to focus on if you are selected to take part in the Seminar? Is this a course you have taught before? Will you teach it regularly? What are the particular challenges and opportunities posed by this course?
    • What do see yourself contributing to this group? For instance, do you have experience, knowledge, or resources that would be of use to others? (Feel free to interpret this question broadly. Even those with little teaching experience can make valuable contributions to the group.)
  3. A cover sheet listing your name, academic rank, department, campus box number, office phone, and e-mail address.
  4. A letter of support from your chair.
