The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) Study Abroad program provides students with an excellent academic program in a lush setting of mountains and beaches. Established in 1904, NMIT offers courses on three campuses, enrolling approximately 3000 full-time students. Students studying abroad will enjoy an array of support from staff and campus facilities, including international student advisors, a coordinator for disabled students, orientation and organized recreational activities. Accommodation options include student dormitories and home stays; meals are included in both plans. Both dormitories and home stays will be located within walking distance of the campus.

Location

Students will take classes on the main Nelson campus located on the northwest corner of New Zealand’s south island. Nelson has 53,000 inhabitants and is known for its artistic community, open-air markets and museums. Cultural fairs and festivals are held year-round. In addition to the spectacular scenery, you may recognize the work of local jewelers and costume designers from the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Nelson’s natural resources allow for all sorts of recreational excursions. The beaches, mountains and national parks provide ample opportunities for swimming, skiing, mountain biking and hiking.

Courses

The academic year in New Zealand begins in February and goes through November, when their summer break begins. Study Abroad participants can take advantage of the school’s strong offerings in Accounting, Business, Nursing, Marketing and the Visual Arts. Courses in adventure tourism may also be of interest. Students will receive letter grades for all coursework completed at NMIT.
